Condemnation Of History
An excerpt from a piece created for the Iconoclast
exhibition at Lloyds Club, London juxtaposing the music
of Hildegard of Bingen, a twelfth century writer,
composer, philosopher, Benedictine abbess and visionary,
against the sound of war.
Written On Silence An exhibition of
sound and video installations at GV Art on November 24,

Inferno
Inferno is a remarkable film from 1911 based on the
poem by Dante Alighieri. Directed by Francesco Bertolini,
Adolfo Padovan and Giuseppe de Liguoro it was the first
Italian feature film and features some striking images,
spectacular for their time.
I have written a new
soundtrack to the film inspired by the entrancing beauty
of Gregorian Chant, music which resonates both with the
images and the story. I have taken this music, and
written some original material, to create a soundtrack
which I believe remains true to the spirit of the poem
and the film. The chants I am working with were written
at, or before, the time of Dante, it is the music he
would have known.
The Sound Of Hours
We live surrounded by extraneous noise and these sounds
directly and indirectly influence our mood, perception
and sense of place. They can affect the way we work, how
we function and how we feel.
I decided to make a record
of these noises, to capture moments of sound on a
typical day. To do this I recorded my environment for
three minutes; the sound of whatever I was doing and
wherever I happened to be on the hour, every hour on
July 29th 2011, a day chosen at random.
The Sound Of Hours
Salt
Salt is an audio visual evocation of the drowned
landscape of the Camargue, inspired by the land, sea,
fauna, flora and traditions of the area as well as
writers and historical characters such as Lawrence
Durrell, Frédéric Mistral and King René of Anjou.
The Bird Sings With It's
Fingers
Inside every film there are numerous other stories
looking to be told. By reframing the image, using
extreme close ups and manipulating the sound some of
these hidden stories can be revealed.
The Birds Sings With It's Fingers is the first in a
series of films within films and is inspired by Jean
Cocteau's Orphée. Every image, sound, even the title
come from the original film.
This video is an excerpt from a large scale
installation.
Portraits In Sound
I have created portraits of people using music, found
sounds and sound collage.

Scene One: A Field
An album of landscape-tones. Steep skylines, low cloud,
pearl ground with shadows in oyster and violet, green
folds and corners, waves of soil. The day melts copper
into the hills, lilac sky, eyes close with the heat. Air
is thickened and clouds stained. Long shore drift, ships
rusting at harbour, shadows that sound and swollen
bruise greys.

the Victoria And Albert Museum in London.

Bend it Like Beckett
Those who are familiar with the work of Samuel Beckett
will know the importance of sound in his work. Beckett
had a great understanding of sound and a profound
knowledge of the practice of listening.
Art Trail/Soundworks is this year based in Shandon, Cork
City. On Beckett’s taking leave of Ireland he made a
final call to Cork, to Shandon, to visit the grave of
Frances Sylvester O’Mahony, aka Fr Prout, a writer he
greatly admired. It seemed appropriate to mark the
occasion of the centenary of Becketts birth by compiling
this CD of one hundred works.
